About NCANS

Since 1958, the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students (NCANS) has served as the statewide professionalizing vehicle of North Carolina nursing students. Conceived as a student branch of the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA), NCANS has historically worked with and continues currently to work with NCNA to aid nursing students in making the important transition from students to licensed nurses.

Through NCNA mentors' guidance and NCANS board members' individual talents, NCANS supports NCNA-affiliated organizations at NC nursing schools in addressing issues such as improving and diversifying student recruitment. Additionally, NCANS connects individual members with valuable information and professional opportunities. Through NCNA and our legislative director, NCANS keeps a pulse on political happenings in Raleigh that directly impact healthcare laws in North Carolina. NCANS also hosts an annual winter conference that allows nursing students to learn more about the latest healthcare issues; meet with potential employers of new nursing school graduates; and participate in mini-NCLEX review sessions.

NCANS is the state affiliate of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). Nursing students in North Carolina who belong to NSNA are automatically members of NCANS.

The purpose of NCANS is:

  • To aid in the development of the nursing student, their professional role, and their responsibility for the health care of people from all walks of life, and

Hurricane Helene Response

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the devastation that has swept through Western North Carolina has left many of us heartbroken. For those of you who call this region home or have strong ties to the area, we understand the deep challenges and emotions you may be experiencing during this difficult time. As nursing students, we are united not only by our commitment to caring for others but also by our compassion for each other in times of need.

On behalf of the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students (NCANS), please know that we stand with you. Our thoughts are with you and your families as you navigate the aftermath of this disaster. Whether you are personally affected or seeking ways to extend your support to those impacted, we are here to support you.

This is just the start of a long recovery process, and many details will certainly evolve in the coming weeks. Hurricane Helene has been a terrible tragedy, and the full scope of its impact will likely not be revealed for several more days or even weeks. Given the ongoing recovery efforts, we want to acknowledge that the NCANS Midyear Convention date may be changed pending further information. We will keep you updated as more details become available.
